Teamwork, Dedication, Transparency, Accountability & Initiative

Save a Woman Fistula Foundation (herein known as ‘the Foundation’) is a not-for-profit organization run  by women for women suffering from fistula in Kenya. Although we primarily focus on obstetric fistula1 often resulting from childbirth, we also deal conditions resulting from rape, cancer, early marriages and  female genital mutilation.

Established by Sharon Korir( a Lawyer and obstetric fistula survivor) in 2019, our long-term goal and  mandate is to protect the rights of women survivors, create awareness and burst myths and stigma around  the condition. Our mission is to provide effective responses to the distresses and injustices that impact  the victims. As a foundation, we approach our mission with the humility to know that we will never fully  understand the complexities of treating fistula.

To achieve our goal/s we diligently work with our local and international partners who are experts in  different areas through our robust platform and network to help us in educating, identifying, contacting  and onboarding those suffering from the condition.

We believe in upholding the inherent dignity of every woman and girl, regardless of their circumstances,  and empower them through support, equality, and inclusivity, advocating for reproductive health rights  and challenging stigma associated with fistula.

Our commitment to holistic care, transparency, and community engagement drives us to provide  comprehensive rehabilitation, promote collaboration, and ensure accountability. With a focus on  continuous learning and resilience, we endeavor to create sustainable solutions to ensure fistula is no longer a source of suffering, but rather a condition met with compassion and support.

To that effect, our theory of change is that IF women with fistula conditions are accorded adequate  medical and social supports, THEN the harm and violations they suffer would be mitigated. For details  about the suffering women go through, see the details below.

Our focus is Kenya, and this is based on the following reasons: a) Kenya faces high maternal mortality  rates, limited healthcare access, and significant reproductive health challenges; b) Women with fistula,  often from marginalized communities, require urgent and sustained care. Thus SAWFF seeks to bridge  this gap, ensuring every woman has access to life-saving treatment and support.

We have given Psychosocial support to more than 40 women before and after surgery who are now the beneficiaries of the Foundation.
In 2021 we conducted a National Retreat for women with fistula at Emory Hotel, Kileleshwa. Where we shared, connected and build relationships with women living and affected by fistula.
Privileged to conduct the Fistula Awareness in all mainstream media, BBC World service and Voice of America.
Conducted Fistula awareness campaign in Kajiado West. 2 women with fistula have undergone successfully corrective surgery and are in the process of healing.
